PROTOTYPER

What makes a useful website concept?

The homepage looks good, but nobody has agreed what the enquiry form should ask. That is a familiar gap in website projects. A useful concept deals with the content and the visitor’s next step as well as the appearance.

Give the website a job

Start with one sentence: this website helps a particular audience do a particular thing. For a specialist consultancy, that might be helping an operations manager understand the service and request an initial conversation. That is more useful than a brief that simply asks for a modern, premium website.

Choose a primary journey, then identify the information a visitor needs to move through it. They may need to understand the offer, see whether it fits their situation, review evidence, and learn what happens after an enquiry. Each of those questions deserves a clear answer, not necessarily a separate page.

Plan the content before polishing the screens

A sitemap describes where information lives. It becomes useful when every page has a purpose and a sensible relationship to the others. If two pages answer the same question, consider combining them. If an important question has no home, the structure is not finished.

Use real draft content where possible. A design that works with a four word placeholder may break when the service name has nine words. Content planning also exposes practical gaps: missing project images, unconfirmed credentials, or a benefit nobody can explain without jargon.

Keep facts and assumptions separate

Write down what you know, what you believe, and what you need to check. A founder may believe visitors understand the industry terminology; a short review with someone outside the business may show otherwise. Treat that difference as useful evidence, not a design failure.

Never fill an empty proof section with invented client logos, percentages, or testimonials. If the business is new, explain the approach, show clearly labelled sample work, and make the next step transparent. Honest specificity is stronger than borrowed credibility.

Review the whole journey, not just the hero

Ask someone to find the relevant service and explain what they would do next. Check the same task on a phone. Include the less glamorous states: an empty search, an invalid form field, a long heading, and an expanded menu.

The approval package should identify the approved direction, key layouts, draft content, open questions, and what is excluded. That gives development a coherent starting point while leaving a visible place for decisions that still need evidence.
